CHURCH REFURBISHMENT

February 2007

External repairs and maintenance to roof and rainwater gutters complete.

The next stage in the refurbishment of the church has commenced following the PCC meeting held on 2nd February.  Following initial discussions with two consultants recommended to us by the Diocese it has been decided to appoint one of these firms to act for us in the preparation of a new heating scheme for the building.

In addition we will also be using them for expertise regarding tender documents, gas supply, relaying of the floor, a new lighting scheme, the appointment of an approved architect, the required faculty application, side panelling (in conjunction with heating installation) and overall project management.

Once the consultants have prepared the necessary specifications and advice we will then be in a position to get the various elements of the work costed.  This is an exciting move forward in the life of the church as we seek to make our building warm, welcoming and adaptable to the needs of a 21st century congregation.

Work commencing and in progress…                        Covering the organ to prevent damage.

Pews stacked up in the centre for removal…

They will be used by the Isle of Wight Council for repair and refurbishment of local cemetery chapels.

Our contractors commenced work in levelling the rather crooked 160-year-old floor on Monday18th April.  Pictures of the results to follow.

Church Refurbishment

Using a Victorian building dating from the 1840's (See History) for 21st Century worship and community use is quite a challenge!  Following a congregational survey in 2002 the Church embarked on a programme of maintenance and refurbishment to restore the building to its former glory as well as making it more comfortable and practical for use as a place of worship.

We regard the building as a focal point within the Parish and are keen to see the Church used for God's present day purposes as well as being a reflection of the faith and tradition of the past.  With this in mind it is our aim to restore, renew and replace as sensitively as possible as well as providing the best facilities available for the future.

Refurbishment (PHASE 1) commenced with a full redecoration of the interior that was completed in May 2003.

The next phase (PHASE 2) of work, to be started as soon as possible, will include the following:

*   Replacement of the pews with modern, comfortable, chairs.

*   Levelling and carpeting of the floor throughout the building.

And finally (PHASE 3)

*   Fitting a replacement heating system
(our existing arrangements are responsible for a lot of hot heads and cold feet!).

*   A new internal lighting scheme.

*   Upgrading of audio and audio-visual facilities.

Along with those responsible for many other older buildings we are addressing the needs of the disabled and people with special needs.  Much of the above work will enable greater access for those in wheelchairs.

Like all major projects these improvements will cost money and we are grateful for the prayer and giving that has resulted in the redecoration element being paid for.  If you feel you would like to help us either financially or practically then by all means get in touch (see the Contact us page).

The P.C.C. has set up a small group to assist with the practical co-ordination and fund raising aspects of this work and the aim is to see this financed and completed during 2005 (PHASE 2) and 2006 (Phase 3)
