OLDIES GUIDE TO CHRISTIAN MUSIC!

Vinyl from the vaults…

One day in a Galaxy far far away, well actually it was in the back of a Christian bookshop, a couple were heard avidly discussing a new CD by Graham Kendrick. It was obvious from the comments that they were looking through the songs to try and find ones that had been released a good number of years ago because way back before the dawn of time, the aforementioned Mr Kendrick had made a number of quite good records before moving into writing an excellent range of hymns and worship songs. This page is therefore dedicated to people “of a certain age” who might just remember some of his stuff and that of other Christian artists – if you are under 25 or 30 it may be meaningless, but hey it’s history!

For those of the iPod, MP3, Minidisc, CD generation here’s some terminology:

LP – Stands for long playing record – actually they weren’t, not compared to a CD anyway, your musical enjoyment was punctuated by having to get up every 15 or 20 minutes to turn the record over.

Vinyl – The black plastic goo that was pressed into 12” (sorry approx 30 cm) circles of musical delight – latter days saw this emerge in a range of naff colours too.

Sleeve – The wondrous card 12” x 12” (yes that is one whole square foot) per side of artwork and words that you could read without the aid of a microscope. Sheer bliss for the optically challenged who nowadays squint at the little books the size of a stamp trying to decipher the lyrics. Posh LP’s came with gatefold sleeves and even more to read.

Scratch – Surface damage to your vinyl allowing the listener to enjoy his or her music with added “scrunch” sounds about every 2 seconds.

Dog eared – The state of surviving LP sleeves that have been cherished by their owners.

Insert – A lyric sheet, sometimes containing the mysterious guitar chords as well.
